The Mac Pro is a desktop computer designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. This article is an overview of the environmental impact of the device throughout its life cycle. Unless otherwise specified, data on this page refers to version MD878 of the device. The device has life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 940 kg carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).
The principal source of information for this article is an environmental report published by Apple Inc. Third-party verification of carbon emissions associated with company operations was obtained by Apple from Bureau Veritas, and calculations of downstream emissions related to the product were checked for quality and accuracy by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany.
The device is composed of aluminum/steel (3660 g), circuit boards (1052 g), copper (715 g), power supply (329 g), and plastics (270 g). GHG emission information specific to materials was not available. The manufacturer states that the devices comply with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS). This directive limits the amount of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and brominated flame retardants PBB and PBDE that can be present in the product. Emissions information specific to materials is included in the production data.
Production of a device is responsible for 611 kg CO2e of GHG emissions or 65% of total life cycle emissions. This includes the extraction, production, and transport of raw materials for the device and product packaging.

The service life of the device is estimated to be four years. Disposal of the device is responsible for 9 kg CO2e of GHG emissions or 1% of total life cycle emissions. Apple Inc. offers recycling programs in 95% of countries where the products are sold.
