The MacBook Pro 15-inch with Thunderbolt 3 is a laptop designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. This article is an overview of the environmental impact of the device throughout its life cycle. Unless otherwise specified, the data on this page refers to one device with 2.6GHz processor and 256GB storage. It has total life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 461 kg carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). The model with a 2.7 GHz processor and 512 GB of storage has a carbon footprint of 469 kg CO2e.
The principal source of information for this article is an environmental report published by Apple Inc. Third-party verification of carbon emissions associated with company operations was obtained by Apple from Bureau Veritas, and calculations of downstream emissions related to the product were checked for quality and accuracy by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany.
Materials used to make the MacBook Pro 15-inch with Thunderbolt 3 include aluminum (770 g), lithium-ion polymer battery (345 g), display (253 g), keyboard/trackpad (151 g), circuit boards (133 g), steel (119 g), plastics (42 g), and other metals (19 g). The manufacturer states that the device demonstrates compliance with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS). This directive limits the amount of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and brominated flame retardants PBB and PBDE that can be present in the product. GHG emission information specific to materials was not available. The power adapter is not included in material reporting. Material features include arsenic-free display glass, mercury-free LED-backlit display, and PVC-free plastic in most locations. Power cords for models sold in India and South Korea are not PVC-free.
Laptop production is responsible for 350 kg CO2e of GHG emissions. The production data includes the environmental impact of the extraction, production, and transportation of raw materials, in addition to the manufacture, transport, and assembly of all parts and laptop packaging.
GHG emission information specific to packaging was not available. Retail packaging materials include 412 grams (g) of paperboard and corrugate, 208 g of high-impact polystyrene, and 16 g of other plastics. The shipping box contributes an additional 499 grams of paperboard/corrugate. The product retail packaging contains a minimum of 38% post-consumer recycled content.
Distribution is responsible for 18 kg CO2e of GHG emissions. The distribution statistics include air and sea transport of the finished product and packaging from the manufacturer to regional distribution centers and transport to end consumers from those distribution centers.
The company estimates that the devices will be used for 4 years. Usage is responsible for 88 kg CO2e of GHG emissions. The GHG emission calculations are based on power consumed during four years of use by the first owner of the laptop. This is based on historical customer use data and regional power generation methods.
End of Life
Product disposal is responsible for 5 kg CO2e of GHG emissions. Product take-back and recycling programs are available in 99% of locations where the products are sold. Calculations of the impact of these programs includes transportation from collection hubs to recycling centers and the mechanical separation and shredding of components.
