The iPad Air 2 is a tablet computer. This article is an overview of the environmental impact of the device throughout its life cycle. Unless otherwise specified, data on this page refers to the 64GB iPad Air 2 with Wi-Fi and Cellular. The device has life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 170 kg carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). The annual global warming potential of the device is about 57 kg CO2e assuming three years of use.[1]

The principal source of information for this article is an environmental report published by Apple Inc.[1] Third-party verification of carbon emissions associated with company operations was obtained by Apple from Bureau Veritas, and calculations of downstream emissions related to the product were checked for quality and accuracy by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany.[2]

Materials

The iPad Air 2 is composed of a battery (130 g), display (108 g), aluminum (76 g), glass (60 g), circuit boards (42 g), plastics (19 g), and other metals (12 g). GHG emission information specific to materials was not available, however they are included in the production data. The manufacturer states that the devices comply with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS). This directive limits the amount of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and brominated flame retardants PBB and PBDE that can be present in the product.[1]

Production

The production GHG emissions for this device include material extraction, production, and transportation, and the manufacture, transport, and assembly of components and packaging. Production of an iPad Air 2 is responsible for 146 kg CO2e of GHG emissions or 86% of total life cycle emissions.[1]

Packaging

The retail packaging for devices sold in the United States weighs 237 grams and is composed of paper corrugate and molded fiber, high-impact polystyrene, and unspecified plastic. The shipping container is responsible for an additional 222 grams of corrugate for each device. GHG emission information specific to packaging was not available. The manufacturer includes it in the production data.[1]

Distribution

Distribution of the iPad Air 2 is responsible for 5 kg CO2e of GHG emissions or 3% of total life cycle emissions. Apple has included, in these measurements, air and sea transport from the manufacturing site to regional distribution hubs and from the distribution hubs to the end consumer.[1]

Usage

Use of the device is responsible for 17 kg CO2e of GHG emissions or 10% of total life cycle emissions. This has been calculated from historic customer use data and a three-year period of use. Accessories, such as cases, screen protectors, or charger purchased by the user are not included in this emission information. Additionally, the sources of electricity in each region will impact the amount of GHG emissions from device use.[1]

End of Life

The service life of the device is estimated to be three years. Disposal of the device is responsible for 2 kg CO2e of GHG emissions or 1% of total life cycle emissions. This includes transportation from collection hubs to recycling centers and the energy used in the mechanical separation and shredding of parts. Recycling is available in 99% of the countries where the devices are sold.[1]
